The complete leather type guide

Not all leather is equal — not even close. Understanding the difference between full-grain, top-grain, genuine leather, and bonded leather is the single most important thing you can do before buying a leather jacket. This guide covers every grade, every animal source, every tanning method, and every finish.

Full-grain leather
The top layer of the hide — the most durable, most natural, most prestigious grade
Highest grade Primary Vault & Hide material

Full-grain leather is cut from the outermost layer of the hide — the part closest to the animal's skin. It retains the natural grain, texture, and surface markings of the original hide. Nothing is sanded, buffed, or corrected away. Every scar, wrinkle, and variation in the grain tells the story of the animal's life — and becomes part of the leather's character over time.

Because the natural grain structure is intact, full-grain leather is the strongest and most breathable of all grades. The tight, dense fibres at the top of the hide resist moisture and abrasion far more effectively than any lower grade. High-quality jackets made from full-grain hide can last 30–50 years with basic maintenance.

What makes it the best

The most distinctive property of full-grain leather is its ability to develop a patina — a rich, deepening surface character that accumulates through wear, exposure to oils from your skin, and contact with the environment. A full-grain jacket worn consistently for 5 years will look noticeably more beautiful and more personal than it did on day one. No other grade does this.

Top-grain leather
The second layer — sanded for uniformity, softer from the start, still genuinely excellent
High grade Used in select Vault & Hide styles

Top-grain leather comes from the same upper layer of the hide as full-grain, but with the surface lightly sanded or buffed to remove natural imperfections — scars, insect bites, or uneven texture. A thin finish coating is then applied to create a more uniform surface appearance.

The sanding removes some of the tightly packed fibres at the very top of the grain, slightly reducing long-term durability and patina potential compared to full-grain. However, it produces a more immediately soft and uniform material that many buyers prefer for its polished look and quicker break-in.

Top-grain is still genuinely excellent leather — it will outlast bonded or genuine leather many times over, and it develops a good patina, just less dramatically than full-grain. Most designer fashion leather jackets in the $400–$1,200 price range use top-grain leather.

A legal grade term — not a quality promise. Real leather, from the lowest usable layer of the hide
Mid grade Not used by Vault & Hide

"Genuine leather" sounds like a quality assurance — it is actually the opposite. It is a legal grade designation for the split layer of the hide — the inner, lower portion left over after top-grain has been separated. It is real leather, but it is the weakest, least durable, and least characterful grade available.

Because the natural grain has been removed, genuine leather must be embossed with an artificial grain pattern and coated heavily to achieve a presentable surface. This coating will crack and peel with wear, typically within 2–5 years. Unlike full-grain, it cannot develop a patina — only deteriorate.

A jacket labelled "genuine leather" at a high-street price point is almost certainly split leather. It is legal to sell, but it is not the same material as full-grain — despite both being described as "real leather."

Bonded leather
Leather scraps and polyurethane — the lowest of all grades. Avoid it entirely.
Lowest grade Never used by Vault & Hide

Bonded leather is not a grade of leather so much as a composite material. It is made by grinding leather scraps and fibres into a pulp, mixing them with polyurethane binders, and rolling the result onto a fabric backing. The surface is then embossed with an artificial grain pattern to simulate real leather.

Bonded leather typically contains anywhere from 10% to 90% actual leather content — the proportion is rarely disclosed. Because the binder is polyurethane, bonded leather will crack, peel, and flake with regular use, usually within 1–3 years. Once it starts peeling, it cannot be repaired or conditioned.

The problem is that bonded leather is legally permitted to be sold as "genuine leather" in the UK, EU, and US — it can appear on product labels alongside far superior materials without any clear indication of quality difference to an untrained buyer.

The species the hide comes from is as important as the grade — each animal produces leather with distinct physical properties

Cowhide
The most common and durable leather for jackets. Thick, structured, and heavy — cowhide develops the best patina of any animal source and is the industry benchmark for biker and bomber jackets.

Tanning methods

How a hide is processed after skinning determines its character, sustainability profile, and how it will age

Vegetable tanning (veg-tan)
The oldest tanning method — uses natural tannins extracted from tree bark (primarily oak, chestnut, and mimosa). Veg-tanned leather is firm, dense, and develops the most extraordinary patina of any method. It takes weeks or months to tan properly, making it expensive. The result is a hide that changes dramatically with wear, developing deep, personalised colour and character over years.

Chrome tanning
The dominant industrial method — uses chromium sulphate salts to tan hides in as little as 24 hours. Chrome-tanned leather is immediately softer and more supple than veg-tan, with more consistent colour and texture. It dyes more easily and produces a more uniform result at scale. The trade-off is a less dramatic patina and environmental concerns around chromium waste if unmanaged.

Combination tanning (retanning)
Starts with chrome tanning for speed and softness, then re-tans with vegetable or synthetic tannins to improve structure, firmness, and patina potential. Most premium fashion and motorcycle leather uses combination tanning — it delivers the best of both methods: immediate softness with long-term character development.

Aldehyde / wet-white tanning
A chrome-free alternative gaining popularity in sustainable luxury leather — uses glutaraldehyde or oxazolidine compounds. Produces a pale "wet-white" leather that is washable, extremely soft, and free from heavy metals. Used primarily in automotive and high-end luxury goods. Increasingly common in premium eco-conscious collections.

Surface finishes

The finish applied after tanning determines how the leather looks, feels, and behaves in daily use

Aniline
Dyed through with no surface coating. Maximum patina development, full grain visibility, breathable. Only possible on the highest quality hides.
Semi-aniline
Aniline-dyed with a light protective topcoat. Retains most natural character while offering better stain and abrasion resistance. The most popular premium finish for jacket leather.
Pigmented / corrected
Heavy opaque coating applied over sanded leather. Consistent, uniform colour and high stain resistance. Less natural character and patina potential. Common in mass-market leather goods.
Pull-up / wax
Wax or oil-finished leather that lightens where stretched. Dramatic patina, very visible wear marks that become part of the character. Loved by heritage leather enthusiasts.
Nubuck
Top-grain leather buffed to create a fine velvet-like nap. Similar look to suede but made from the outer grain side — stronger than suede. Requires specialist care and water protection.
Suede
Made from the split or flesh side of the hide — soft, velvety nap. Less durable than full-grain but exceptionally soft and tactile. Requires regular brushing and suede protector spray.
Patent / lacquer
High-gloss lacquer coating applied over the leather surface. Very shiny, completely waterproof, easy to clean. No patina development. Fashion-forward rather than heritage-oriented.
Burnished / antique
Darker colour applied at edges and raised grain areas to create a vintage, aged appearance. Simulates the patina a jacket would develop over years of wear — immediately characterful.

Care by leather type

Different leathers require different care — using the wrong product on the wrong hide can damage it permanently
